The Donut Tears

July 11th, 2012

For the most part, my hormones haven’t been out of control. I joke about being a Hormonal Hulk at times, but it’s really all in jest. I have yet to experience an uncontrollable outburst of rage or tears – apart from this story…

Graeme and I carpool most mornings and this particular day he decided he could use a little pick-me-up from Starbucks. As we made the detour to the drive-thru I asked if he would please order a donut. As he happily places his order with the attendant, he forgets to mention my request.

So I remind him.

“Graeme, donut!”

He stares at me blankly.

He stares at me blankly, turns his head to the speaker, “That will complete my order.”

I was brutally rebuffed (Clueless FTW!).

Not knowing what to say or how to react, I will let this popular Internet meme summarize my feelings.

Betrayed by the man I married. A flood of emotions washed over me.

“Why didn’t you order me a donut?!”
“Because I didn’t want one.”

I sobbed. Literally sobbed. Over a fried, glazed, circular piece of glistening (oh god I want one right now) cake.

Graeme is mortified. What do you do with a sobbing pregnant woman in the passenger seat? When I see the look on his face of complete astonishment and horror, I start laughing hysterically. Crying and laughing. Laughing and crying.

I. Am. Ridiculous. Maybe not the Hormonal Hulk, but at least his bi-polar cousin. It’s not long until we reach the window and Graeme is able to correct his grave error.

He receives his coffee; I receive my donut. We both receive a mutual, deeper understanding (not to mention fear) of each other. I get my donut, he lives another day to drink overpriced coffee.

And because I never pass up a pun, the moral of the story is as follows: Donut mess with Hormonal Hulk.

And I just have to put this out there publicly: I hate Starbucks coffee. I only go there when my super-hormonal wife (kidding!) has a need for donuts.
