A Rose By Any Other Name

June 10th, 2012

Graeme and I were fairly picky when it came to choosing a name. And given the last name “Hunt,” it certainly ruled out any names or nicknames which ended with a hard “c” or “k.”

However, we knew for certain we wanted to make my maiden name the baby’s middle name. I’m the last of the Winter clan, so it’s a bit sentimental. Plus, it’s kind of cool. So far, two out of three names are chosen, we just need one more…

We searched through numerous baby books (this one being my favorite) and racked our brains to recollect family history. We just couldn’t think of anything that stuck. For the interim, we called him “Lent Baby.” After all, Lent was a great cover-up for turning down libations (no easy feat in the advertising business). However, the name would only hold-up for 40 days.

It was during lunch with Graeme’s parents one day when the subject of baby names came up again. We wanted something unique, but not trendy. Classic and bold without being pretentious. These were our finalists:

Still, nothing was really jiving. At that moment Les, Graeme’s dad, asked, “What about Maxwell?”

It was simple.

It was clear.

It didn’t result in the vulgar name of a certain female part.

It was perfect.

Being the over-thinking, obsessive name nerds we are, Graeme and I still browsed baby books, but Maxwell remained at the top of the list. Nothing else had quite the same ring to it.

So that day, over our various lunches and idle chatter, Maxwell came to be. And the rest, is future history.
